The 4C's

A routine for identifying key concepts from a text.

Description: The 4C’s thinking routine provides a set of questions that encourage leaners to grapple with the information provided in the text in a purposeful and structured way. The test-based discussion is built around making connections, asking questions, identifying key ideas, and considering application.

How to Use the Strategy: 

Refer to pages 140-146 in the book Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding, and Independence for All Learners.

Notes: 
Works best with complex text that can be seen from more than one viewpoint and will encourage debate. Textbooks are often NOT the best choice for use with the 4C's routine.
