At today's Professional Development session, Reuther staff members brought their student documentation of a thinking routine that was conducted in their classrooms. The staff conducted a Gallery Walk in three rounds which allowed for every staff member to introduce and explain their experience with the routine. Staff used the Compass Points routine to guide their explanation. Following the Gallery Walk, staff reflected in their journals using the I Used to Think, Now I Think routine.

The Understanding Map was shared with staff as a resource for unit planning.  CIA (Curriculum-Instruction-Assessment) Teams (department teams) were provided time to meet to plan their next upcoming unit.  Starting the unit plan with exploring the types of thinking wanted in the lesson was a new way for most staff to begin.

The reading of Chapters 5 & 6 of Making Thinking Visible were assigned to be read by February 13, 2014, the next scheduled Professional Development Day. In addition, staff is expected to implement one of the thinking routines designed on their next unit's Understanding Map and will bring the student documentation to the PD for further discussion.

Staff conducted an evaluation of the day's activities and the response was overwhelmingly positive. They really felt it was beneficial to hear and see what their colleagues had implemented in their classrooms. It was apparent that
many left the session with new ideas for future implementation of routines and an excitement to do so.
