In an effort to continue to grow a culture of thinking across the middle schools in Rochester, we scheduled four opportunities for middle school staff to collaborate with colleagues from across the district, modeled after Oakland Schools' Design Studio. These sessions should further enhance our Teacher Leader program at the middle school level.  These sessions were offered as Personal Professional Development and took place from 2:45pm - 4:45pm on the following dates:

April 29, 2014  at West Middle School
May 8, 2014 at Hart Middle School
May 15, 2014 at VanHoosen Middle School
May 20, 2014 at Reuther Middle School

Year 2: Reuther Staff Visits Wass Elementary

Eleven staff members toured Wass Elementary of the Troy School District.  Matt Jansen, Wass Principal, provided our staff with an overview of his school's visible thinking journey. Next, staff roamed the hallways and classrooms observing the 8 Cultural Forces. Through a Connect-Extend-Challenge thinking routine, Principal Jansen concluded the tour.

Reuther staff members had the following thoughts about the experience:
  • Bill Staugaard - "Witnessed what a culture of thinking can look like when it is implemented by devoted leadership and a motivated staff!"
  • Kim Dyas - "Anyone can do Visible Thinking routines at their own comfort level or age appropriate level. There is no right or wrong way."
  • Jessica Szczepanski - "Having a culture of thinking is not just about implementing routines."
  • Amy Hoekstra - "Using visible thinking routines is only a small part of creating a culture of thinking in your classroom."
  • Natalie James - "When a school is a culture of thinking, the thinking and learning is elevated to a whole new level- a level that could not be reached without these cultural forces."
